Scotland: Loch Etive, Highland Cows, and a Rainy Day in Glencoe

Summary. On a rainy day in Glencoe, we set out by car to experience the rugged beauty of Scotland’s Highlands. Our journey included the scenic 12-mile drive along Loch Etive, where dramatic skies and misty landscapes created a quintessential Scottish atmosphere. Along the way, we stopped to hang out with a herd of iconic Highland cows before continuing to Fort William, where we spent time exploring this charming Highland town.

[This blog is part of our 15-days in the British Isle trip].

The day started with breakfast in our lodging from Stiff Peaks Patisserie. Soooo good.

Glencoe Visitors Center. Next we drove over for a quick stop at the Glencoe Visitors Center.

12-mile Etive Road to Loch Etive. Despite the stormy weather, we set out to drive the scenic 12-mile route along Etive Road. This out-and-back journey follows Loch Etive, winding through some of Scotland’s most breathtaking landscapes. The dramatic skies and passing showers only enhanced the experience, adding a sense of wild beauty to the rugged countryside. In fact, the stormy conditions seemed to amplify the unmistakable Scottish atmosphere, making the drive feel even more authentic and memorable.

Sunny Highland Cows. Just as the sun came out, we came across these beauties. Highland cows are one of Scotland’s most recognizable animals, known for their long, shaggy coats, sweeping horns, and distinctive fringe that often covers their eyes. Descended from ancient Celtic cattle and raised in the Scottish Highlands for centuries, they were bred to withstand the region’s harsh weather and rugged terrain. Today, their gentle nature and iconic appearance have made them a beloved symbol of Scotland’s history and rural charm.

Fort William Next, we drove over to nearby Fort William. This small town has a couple of restaurants for dinner, shops for souvenirs, and a must-see little museum (below).

West Highland Museum. This small but impressive museum houses fascinating artifacts from the Highlands.

Here is a video our our day in the Glencoe area.
