Scotland: Climbing Ben Nevis and Touring a Classic Distillery

Summary. On our second day in the Highlands, we hiked the famous Ben Nevis hike. This hike, spanning over 10 miles, involves an elevation gain of more than 4,400 feet, with nearly all of it occurring within the first 5 miles. Therefore, get ready for a continuous climb all the way to the summit. This well-known hike is often crowded, so we began our trek at 7:00 a.m. We strongly suggest starting early, as the crowds quickly gathered behind us, which could have made the narrower sections of the trail quite frustrating. After completing this epic hike, we participated in a classic Scottish ritual of Whisky drinking by taking a tour of Ben Nevis Distillery, which included a Whisky tasking.

[This blog is part of our 15-days in the British Isle trip].

Ben Nevis Hike. After arriving early for the hike, we parked in the trailhead parking lot, used the available restroom, paid for our parking, and then set out on foot.

About 1/2 way to the top, the terrain begins to change and become more rocky and barren.

Near the top of the summit, depending on what time of yar to go, for us it was the end of May, the snow still was covering the ground and trail. The summit itself was barely visible but we made it!

Here is a little video of the whole hike. The day was beautiful, marked by an unexpected snowy peak, making it both fun and memorable.

Ben Nevis Distillery Tour. After our hike, we returned to our lodging, cleaned up, and headed back out for a Whisky tour because you know, when in Rome. We thought this one was especially fitting since we just hiked Ben Nevis.

The guided tour of the distillery shows visitors how the spirit is made from start to finish. You’ll learn about the ingredients, equipment, and production process from knowledgeable staff. The tour gives a clear look at how flavor and quality are developed in each batch. We booked our tour in advance as they do sell out, especially during high season.

And now for the tasting....
