Ice Trekking on Perito Moreno Glacier, Patagonia, Argentina

Updated: 5 days ago

Summary. On this fantastically beautiful day, we went ice trekking adventure on Perito Moreno Glacier, a stunning natural wonder situated near the town of El Calafate in Patagonia, Argentina. Our group gathered at the designated starting point, where expert guides provided us with essential safety gear, including crampons and helmets, ensuring that we were well-prepared for our trek across the rugged ice surface. After an introduction to the glacier's unique characteristics and the ecological significance of this magnificent ice field, we set off on our trek. The combination of fresh air, stunning scenery, and the thrill of this unique hiking experience, made this day truly unforgettable. Our only regret was not choosing the longer option!

Minitrekking with Howlanders. This ice trekking company offers three options from mini to "big ice." In hindsight we should have gone with a longer option even it was more expensive. So if you're on the fence about which option, we would say go with the longer option since our only regret was not spending more time on the ice. We highly recommend this company.

Logistics. The package includes a boat transfer from Puerto Bajo las Sombras, situated just inside Los Glaciares National Park, to the Perito Moreno Glacier. It takes about an hour to reach the port's parking lot from El Calafate, and park passes are not part of your Howlander fees. If you haven't rented a car, transfers are available through Howlanders. Remember to bring a lunch and snacks. Equipment for ice trekking, such as crampons and helmets, is provided. Be sure to wear long pants and warm clothing.

Hike to Ice. The boat leaves passengers at a dock near the Glacier. Upon arrival, there are facilities available, including a spot to leave packed lunches. After a brief pause, the group is split into smaller groups, each led by a guide for a short hike to the Perito Moreno Glacier.

Right before we prepared our equipment, we stopped at this viewpoint to capture photos and observe massive ice chunks crashing into the water. Our guide shared the history of the Glacier and the surrounding area with us. Watching the enormous chunks fall, each accompanied by a booming sound, was truly incredible.

Ice Trekking. After distributing all the equipment, we received a brief instruction on walking on the glacier ice before setting off onto the glacier. The ice displays stunning shades of blue that are best appreciated in person. The hike is straightforward and manageable for anyone with a moderate level of fitness.

Scotch on Ice. At the turnaround point, the group stopped for a snack with your choice of champaign chilled on ice, scotch on ice, or sparkling apple cider.

Photo opportunities. The ice is truly remarkable to witness, so you'll definitely want to photograph it. Throughout the experience, there are numerous chances to pause and take pictures. Although stopping for photos can occasionally feel disruptive, we believe it's worthwhile. How often do you get the chance to take such beautiful family pictures?

Lunch and Coffee. After the hike, we enjoyed our packed lunch we brought on the picnic tables and complementary coffee that came with the ice trekking package.

Making our way back to the port. After lunch, the boat took us back to Puerto Bajo las Sombras. We spent some time outside watching the beautiful Perito Moreno Glacier disappear from our view.

Fun Day. This was an enjoyable day for the entire family. We suggest it for families with children who are old enough to safely hike on the Glacier. Our older kids (all adults) also had a fantastic time. It's not every day you can claim to have hiked on a Glacier. As mentioned, our only regret is not opting for the longer trekking experience.
