Denmark

Our time in Denmark was limited to the City of Copenhagen. We look forward to returning to this friendly country but in the meantime, we can at least highly recommend this colorful Danish City, which was a highlight of our 15-day Northern Europe vacation. There were two stand-out, "must do," experiences in Copenhagen. The first was renting bicycles to explore the City on two wheels and the other was taking a Danish baking class in the Frederiksberg neighborhood. This colorful metropolis is bike-friendly and has so many beautiful buildings to see that you may just miss out if you travel only by foot.

Things To-Do

Christiansborg Palace: This early 20th Century palace is the home of the Danish Supreme Court, Parliament, and the Prime Minister's seat. Damaged by fire over the years, the building is the third palace constructed on this site, with the first dating back to the 12th Century. Our favorite stop here was the self-guided tour of the Royal Stables exhibit.

Nyhavn, Copenhagen:  This commercial port was constructed between 1670 and 1675. The channel it sit on was dug by Swedish prisoners of war during the Dano-Swedish War (between 1658 and 1660). Today, this colorful street is now the home of shops and restaurants catering to tourists. Tip: Walk on the opposite side of canal for the best photos, and far less street traffic.

Rent Bicycles to Explore the City: Our self-made, self-guided bicycle tour took us to the Frederiksberg neighborhood, through the art district known as Freetown Christiania, around old town Copenhagen and finally to see the Mermaid.  We used Donkey Bike rentals with their easily recognizable orange bicycles. Throughout the City you will see them parked here and there. The downloadable app lets you know where available bikes are located, with everything else handled within the app such as bike locks and rental rates.

Danish Baking Class:  Travel by train from central Copenhagen to the Frederiksberg neighborhood for a Danish baking class. Sign up through AirBnB experiences. We participant takes home twelve (!) pastries after this hands-on 3.5 hour, fun experience.

Explore Copenhagen's Historic Buildings: Travel We visited City Hall (photo left), Tivoli Gardens, the Danish Parliament building (with its free lift to the tower), Rosenborg Castle (photo right), Round Tower, and more.
